When an Anime Creator Becomes a Reflection

You have an imaginary self. Perhaps they wield a sword and wear a great long coat that flaps in the wind. Maybe they have gentle eyes and paint splatters on their hands and live in a plant-filled studio apartment. Whatever that vision looks like, the desire to see it flesh out – to be stood on its feet, to come to life, from head to toe – is one that many people feel more than they’re comfortable admitting. Creating it with the help of an anime character creator full body tool is one thing. Using it as a springboard to custom anime art is quite another, and the gap between those two abilities is far greater than many think.

"custom

Character creators, at best, are blueprints. They allow you to sketch out proportions, nail down a general shape, and choose clothing and hair before starting to draw. Like architectural plans, they’re helpful, guiding, but not the final product. The transformation from a character creator image to a real piece of artwork is an artistic interpretation, and it’s that interpretation that takes your character creator personal identity from a set of drop-down boxes to a visual representation that is uniquely yours.

Why Full Body is More Important than Portrait

Your face gives you some information about who you are. A body tells you everything. Posture is personality. Weighting, whether it is a crouch or a wide-legged stance, or a standoffish crossed-arms attitude, reveals a lifetime’s worth of experience without a word being spoken. Clothing choices from the neck down communicate class, subculture, occupation and mood. An accessory as small as the type of shoe or a bit of damage to a piece of jewelry like a keychain or a worn-out strap on a handbag adds a dimension of character to the background of the artwork that is otherwise unavailable in a portrait.

This is why body shots for custom anime art are different to headshots. You are not simply asking what does this character look like. You are trying to understand how they move in the world. A quiet, bookish character and a loud, city savvy character can have the same face in a character creation tool but can say two entirely different things when you see them standing. The body is the aspect of character design that translates personality into physical form and if this is done well in anime art, the viewer finds themselves looking at a character who has been there all along and is being introduced to them for the first time.

Body design also creates the space for the narrative to unfold around a character. What are they holding? What is the space around them telling us about them or the situation we are looking at? It’s the kind of information that is avoided by a portrait and supplied by a full figure composition, sometimes unintentionally. A person holding something – a letter, a gun, a cup of coffee – is already doing something. This is the type of information that draws the viewer in.

The Character Creator as a Creative Conversation Starter

Here is a truth about character creator tools that is often overlooked: the first try is rarely best. You choose the hairstyle you think you like and it is a bit off. The clothes you wanted look too formal on the template. The palette looked great until you saw it put together and it looked evil when you wanted enigmatic. That is not failure. This is the creative process in action.

Character creators are best used as a springboard, for discussion with yourself and with the artist who will bring them to life. The result shows you what direction you are headed. It tells you what is good and what is bad. Once you’ve gone through a couple of iterations in a character creator tool, you have a better sense of what you want than you would by simply writing it down on paper. That detail is what makes the jump to artist possible and supports them to craft something that feels right rather than something that fits the brief.

It’s always worth bringing references in addition to your character creator results. Not because the artist needs to be told what to do, but because there is often a massive disconnect between what people imagine in their minds and what they can communicate with words. A screen shot of the creator plus a reference of the palette plus a reference for genre or mood narrows that gap. The closer you can convey what the character should feel like (not look like) to the artist, the closer you will get to the image you have in your mind’s eye.

How Custom Art Improves the Character Creator

Once the overall structural choices are made – silhouette, costume design, coloration, personality – it’s the job of custom anime art to give it life. That implies decisions that can’t be made by a character creator. Where’s the light and how does it illuminate this character’s particular face and clothes to suit the mood? How and where are the line weights heavier to attract attention, and thinner to recede? How does the shading pattern support the personality of the character (more graphic and harsh for an abrasive character, softer and more atmospheric for one that’s more reflective)?

These are not stylistic flourishes. They are characterization tools. A character that is rendered with heavy shadows and strong contrast looks like a person who is in the middle of something. The same character drawn with gradient shading looks like someone who is in the middle of a less dramatic scene. Pose is also important – not only as an expression of character, but as an element of composition.

"custom

The end result, if all of these elements fall into place, is that the character doesn’t feel like they’re designed – they feel like they’re discovered. As though the character was always there, and the creator tool plus the custom art process was the way to find them. That feeling – of a character falling into place and just feeling like it’s supposed to be there – is what makes all those iterations, reference images, conversations with artists about light and mood and line weight all worthwhile. It’s the moment the imagined character is no longer an idea and becomes a reality.
