How Character Creation Is the Most Important Part of an Anime Story

People think stories begin with plots. It doesn’t. It begins with a face – a profile, an emoticon, the way a character’s eyes glisten when they’re “not crying”; character creation anime always gets this, which is why we can get hung up on character sheets the way architects get hung up on plans. If you get the character wrong, the story unravels.

"custom

That’s why some characters stick in your mind for years after the series has long ended. It’s not the twists and turns of the plot. It’s not the music (although that does help). It’s the character design – that particular mix of visuals and personality traits that make someone feel more like a person than an object to be manipulated. Original anime art taps into that, giving artists the ability to create characters who tell stories, not characters who simply fill them.

A Costume is Not a Character

This is where a lot of people get hung up: they mistake character design for costume design. Making a character wear a robe or giving them a hairdo doesn’t make them alive. Visual storytelling is more than accessories. It’s in their stance, in how they clasp their jaw when they’re nervous, in how their mouth is usually set. A character with a chipped sword and a tired smile communicates before they ever utter a word.

This is the skill that allows you to create a supporting character that people remember, and for whom they write fan fiction 15 years later. When you take this kind of care in creating characters – thinking not just about how a person looks but what their looks mean about their character – the plot falls into place. The story is created by the character, not imposed on the character.

It’s all made easier by custom anime art. You don’t have to learn how to draw for years before you can start experimenting with your characters. This has been a real boon for stories. More people creating more kinds of characters means more stories that are telling stories that we haven’t seen told before.

Positive Storytelling Isn’t Soft Storytelling

First things first: positive storytelling is not synonymous with soft storytelling. This doesn’t mean everything gets tied up in a bow, the bad guys are reclaimed by the end, or the characters don’t suffer. Positive storytelling doesn’t mean that – it means that the focus is on growth, connection and meaning when things get tough. positive storytelling doesn’t mean that – it means that the focus is on growth, connection and meaning when things get tough. Characters in positive stories can be painful, tragic and emotional. They just do it for a purpose.

This is important to keep in mind when designing characters for this type of narrative. A character built to be told in a positive story is not necessarily happy and sunny. They could be jaded, hurt, or with an unresolved grudge. They’re defined by a journey that has an arc of change – one that isn’t about one tragedy after another after another. The visual design should reflect that. There’s a difference between a character who is looking down and a character who is looking downcast. One implies a story in progress. The other suggests it’s over.

"custom

When artists draw commissions for anime art for creators of positive stories, the commission brief might include notes on the emotional journey, as well as style references. What will the character look like at the start and finish? What are the clues in the design of where they’re headed to? These are questions that enrich the process of character creation.

Creating Characters Who Fit in the World

World-building and character creation should interact, but they’re sometimes separated. You do the world here and the characters here and then sort of hope they work together. This method will work for some projects, but it’s not enough. Characters who are part of the world are designed that way. The way they dress, the way they scar, the way they wear their hair, what they always carry on them – all of these elements tell a story about where they live.

Consider what we can learn about a good character design just by looking. A person who comes from a northern, cold climate has a different bearing than a person who comes from the coast. Someone who grew up in a military school holds themselves differently than someone who didn’t. These things aren’t ornamental. They’re structural elements. They’re viewed subconsciously and help the viewer suspend disbelief in the story being presented.

This sort of contextual layering is possible with custom anime art because the creator and artist can work together to determine what the character’s visual language should convey. It’s a dialogue, not a sale. The creator brings knowledge of the character; the artist brings words. When successful, the design is also inevitable – like the character couldn’t look any other way.

The Trap of Over-Designing

There’s a common failure mode with anime character designs, and it is opposite to what most people think. It’s not under-designing. It’s over-designing. So much to see on a character that the eye doesn’t know where to look, so much to mean that the character feels not quite human and more like a mood board with clothes.

There’s a tendency for less experienced creators to think depth is complexity. Clarity is character depth. Great character designs in anime have a strong silhouette – you can spot them from afar, in silhouette, from a sketch. This is achieved through simplicity, by making fewer, better decisions. One strange, contrasting color used wisely will convey more than fifteen different tints.

Making the Process Work for You

When creating a character, the process isn’t one and done, and the design shouldn’t be, either. The best way to do it is the iterative way – a quick sketch to get the right shape and mood, then another to refine the shape, then the detail work, then test the design in different poses and poses. Jumping to the final design can lead to prematurely committing to a choice.

"custom

The successful characters are the ones we’ve designed intentionally from the start – where we’ve made choices with intention, where we’ve based our design on an understanding of who this person is and what they’re doing. That’s the goal to aim for, and it’s closer than you might think if you take it a step at a time.
