Don’t Settle for Mediocre Character Customisation

It’s a familiar feeling to every anime fan: you’re playing a game, or working on something creative and you’re looking at a character creator and there’s nothing you see onscreen that resembles you. It’s not your mood, it’s not your style and it’s not the way you see yourself. So you settle on the least-bad choice and sigh. It doesn’t have to be like this. The power to customize anime character and change the designs of anime characters has altered the meaning behind art as a means of self-expression, and it’s more than a matter of changing hair colours.

"custom

Personality is a tricky thing to express visually. We spend so long trying to express ourselves through the clothes we wear, the decor we choose, the music we listen to when we’re alone. With a custom anime character, all that work is done at once, in a single image. When done right, it speaks volumes about someone without a word of dialogue. Done poorly, it’s an anime character with random accessories.

It’s Not Just Aesthetics, It’s Visual Language

When people think about character customization, they think about aesthetics. Let’s get you a new pair of socks, honey, and what length hair would you like? The better way to think about it is visual communication. What message is sent by the character long before someone reads their description? What kind of impression do you make on the viewer, and is that impression true to yourself?

Here is the beauty of custom anime art as expressive. A designer who’s creating a custom character for you isn’t translating what you want – they’re translating what you are. Someone who thinks of themselves as quietly confident might have a design that’s dressed down but has a posture that asserts itself. A person who is warm but easily intimidated might end up with a character design that’s friendly to look at, but that’s also soft to look at so that it’s never too direct. These aren’t obvious choices. They are a conversation between the designer and artist about the character.

That’s the difference between a character that is like you and a character that represents you. Representation is a checklist. Having a character with your hair and your height is a start. But a character that actually feels like you – that’s another thing, and it’s worth striving for.

People Have Depth, and So Should the Characters

So how do you describe yourself to a stranger? Not your LinkedIn profile, your true self. It’s probably an amalgam of opposites. Shy but a big voice in small groups. Shy except when it’s important, then suddenly garrulous. Rational for most, quite irrational for a handful of things. This, thisness, this complexity is what is interesting about a person and it’s what should be interesting about a character.

"custom

Flat characters are flat because they’re saying one thing. All of the design choices are consistent. The edgy character has black and white, jagged edges, a pouty look and a macabre scar. Artistically coherent, very predictable. Human beings aren’t coherent. Those are where they’re interesting. The person who dresses up like a grandma but has one piece of jewelry they never take off that doesn’t match with the rest of their wardrobe. The person who has everything in their workspace in disarray except for one shelf that’s totally organized. At its best, custom anime art finds the visual equivalent of these contradictions and incorporates them into the design of the character so the design is interesting.

That’s why the commission is as important as the reference. The artist with only visual references will create a design that looks like the original. An artist working from an accurate description of the person’s personality, habits, quirks and contradictions will create something real.

What your Comfort Zone Says about You

Here’s a fun experiment: take note of where you fall back on safe options. When it comes to design, most people, when presented with unlimited creative possibilities, immediately start limiting their choices to the safe ones they know they like. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – we have preferences, and they shouldn’t be ignored – but it can stop you from getting the right fit. The character you’d feel most represented by could be different from the character you’d have initially picked.

Artists who know what they’re doing challenge this politely. They ask questions that dig deeper – not just “what are your favourite colours” but “what does your ‘best self’ look like at their best?” Not just “long or short hair” but “is this a neat person or is she always in the middle of something?” Asking these questions helps you figure things out. You might find that midway through the process you’ve been describing a character that’s a more aspirational version of yourself, and that’s good to know.

You can get both with custom anime art. Some people want a character who embodies who they are, both good and bad. Other people want a character that represents who they want to be – aspirational, rather than documentary. Both are good, but the designs will be quite different and blending them in the brief will result in a confused character design that doesn’t work for either purpose.

When the Character Surprises You

The greatest reward of using custom anime art to create a character based on your personality is when the design surprises you. Not because it’s bad – because it’s better than you thought. It’s something you’ve never consciously put into words, or seen reflected before, but you do recognise it. And that’s a very weird and beautiful feeling. custom anime art is the function of art.

"custom

This tends to occur when you’ve written a deep rather than broad brief. When a client gives an artist 10 reference photos and 5 pages of personality description it seems like a lot, but the artist is only working from what you’ve given them that is most concrete and authentic. The reference photos give them visual cues. The personality description gives them the personality. When they’re both good, it’s better than you expected. You asked for an anime version of you and you got a character whom you would want to meet – which, fortuitously, is you.
